  • I may be wrong, but a pop tax?!?!?!?

    I was watching the news tonight, which I don't really do that often, but there was a report about the government wanting to tax soda pop.  The reason given was to try to dissuade people from buying it.  The fewer pops we drink, the healthier we will be.  This sounds like a solid rational, on the surface.  What you need to realize is that people will pay more for their addiction.  Soda pop is a cheap drink for people who can't afford the better quality drinks.  So you tax the item which people have a hard time quitting and can afford a substitute (sounds like another sin taxed item cigarettes).  Well there is always water.  Oh wait you either pay for the purification system or the bottle because tap water isn't safe.  Let’s come back to that later.  Well let’s say that the tax does help give people an incentive to quit drinking pop.  Good we have a healthier society, right?  Wrong.  People tend to replace one addiction for another, and then we can tax the other popular item.  Not to mention the decrease in demand will affect the soda companies who will have to lay off people, but maybe the government can bail them out like GM.  

    Instead of taxing soda, why not offer tax credits and other incentives for farmers and other produce companies to promote cheaper, healthier produce in our supermarkets?  Make sure gym and health classes are offered in schools instead of being eliminated due to budget cuts.  If it is the public's health they are concerned about, why not come up with a viable solution to the problem instead of another way to fill their pocket books at our expense.
